Moving with roommates without mixing up everyone's stuff

Moving out of a shared apartment involves belongings whose ownership may be clear, shared, forgotten or currently under discussion. It helps to settle that discussion before somebody carries the sofa downstairs.

Start with a simple division of what is moving and where it is going. If you are moving one room and a share of the household items, our small-moves service is the relevant place to plan the load.

Agree on shared possessions before packing them

Walk through common rooms together and identify the pieces that need a decision. Furniture, kitchen equipment, rugs and cleaning supplies are easy to overlook when each person is focused on a bedroom.

Record who is taking each shared item and whether anything has to happen before it leaves. That could be collecting a replacement, arranging a sale or agreeing on a handover time. Keep financial and ownership decisions between the people involved; the moving crew cannot resolve them at the door.

Where agreement is still pending, mark the item as undecided and keep it out of the confirmed inventory until the decision is made. Tell the mover if the final load changes.

Make the destinations explicit

If everyone is going to one new apartment, label boxes for the rooms in that home. If people are moving to different addresses, add the owner’s name and destination clearly.

Do not rely on a bedroom’s location at the old apartment as proof of ownership. Shared belongings move between rooms, and a box can be packed wherever there is floor space.

Use consistent labels across the household. Our box-labeling guide explains a simple room-and-contents approach. With separate destinations, the address or agreed destination identifier becomes part of that system.

Keep belongings for different moves apart where space allows, without blocking an exit or common passage. Explain the arrangement when the crew arrives.

Give the mover an inventory of your actual share

Describe what you are taking, rather than the size of the apartment you are leaving. “Moving out of a three-bedroom” does not say whether you are taking a bed and boxes or most of the furniture.

Include shared items allocated to you, belongings in hall cupboards and anything stored elsewhere in the building. Mention furniture you still plan to buy or collect so that extra stops and new items can be discussed before they become moving-day additions.

If you are selling furniture to a roommate who is staying, make that clear in the inventory. A piece can look ready to move even though its ownership has changed.

Plan access around the people who remain

Tell the household when the move is scheduled and which rooms the crew will need to reach. Ask roommates to keep the agreed carrying route clear and to separate anything that should stay.

Check who can provide access if you are collecting keys at the new address. Choose a contact who understands the inventory and can answer practical questions about the move. Avoid giving several people conflicting instructions to pass along.

Set aside things that often belong to somebody else

Before packing, look for borrowed books, chargers, dishes, work equipment and household keys. These are small enough to vanish into an otherwise well-organized box.

Return what you can before the final packing session. Put remaining handoffs in a clearly identified place and tell the other person where to find them.

Keep personal papers and account information under your control. If a shared device or account needs an ownership change, handle that separately from the furniture move. Packing the router does not automatically settle who is responsible for the internet service.

Leave a clear handover

Check your room and the shared areas where you stored belongings once the load is out. Open cupboards, look behind doors and confirm that the possessions intended to stay are still there.

Agree on key return, cleaning and any remaining practical tasks with the relevant people. Lease responsibilities and financial arrangements depend on your agreement and circumstances; do not infer them from the date a box leaves the apartment.

Prepare the new household too

If you are moving in with new roommates, confirm which furniture already exists and where your belongings will fit. It is better to discover that both households own a dining table before the second one reaches the stairs.

Share room labels and any agreed furniture layout with the mover. Keep decisions simple enough for somebody else to follow.

A good roommate move leaves the relationships and the inventory understandable. The boxes are usually the easier part.
