How to check any mover in New York
This works on us and on everyone else. It takes about five minutes and costs nothing.
- Ask for the numbers in writing. A legitimate company gives you a USDOT and a NYSDOT number without hesitating. If you get a runaround instead of a number, you have your answer.
- Put them into the public lookups. The FMCSA snapshot shows the legal name, the operating status and the insurance on file. The state registry covers moves inside New York.
- Check the name matches. The company you're emailing should match the company on the record, so treat a similar name or a parent company you've never heard of as a warning sign.
- Ask for a certificate of insurance. If your building needs one, a real mover produces it as routine.
- Get the quote in writing. A number quoted sight-unseen, with no questions about your building, is a number that can change on the day.
If a company fails any of these, you've learned something useful before anything was on a truck.
