Ridgewood is six-family yellow brick, block after block of it, and the rows around Woodbine, Madison and Putnam run the same front the length of the block. Those Mathews Model Flats stand three floors over a stoop, two apartments to a landing, and there is no elevator in any of them. Plenty are railroads inside, one room opening straight into the next, so a wardrobe in the back bedroom has to cross the whole apartment before it sees the front door. We measure the wide pieces against the doorframes and the stair turn first, and the doors and the legs come off anything that is going to be tight.
Parking is the first thing we settle here. The blocks off Forest Avenue and Seneca Avenue run alternate-side, so the truck goes on whichever side is clear that morning and the walk from stoop to tailgate stays short. Above the shops on Myrtle Avenue or Fresh Pond Road the curb is spoken for between the buses and the deliveries, so we load from a side street and carry the pieces around the corner already padded. If your building has a management office, which tends to be the newer ones and the conversions closer to Wyckoff Avenue, the certificate of insurance goes over to that office in the week before your date, worded the way they want it.
Ridgewood meets Brooklyn along Wyckoff Avenue for the blocks below Palmetto Street, and the line jogs back to St. Nicholas and Cypress Avenues above that, so a move between here and Bushwick can change borough and still be a ten-minute drive. Others go the other way, a one-bed trading up to something bigger a few stops along the M at Forest Avenue or Fresh Pond Road, or a family leaving the top floor of a six-family for a house deeper into Queens. Whichever it is, the price is flat and agreed first, so a long carry from a side street costs the same as a short one from the door.

Can the truck get close to my door in Ridgewood?
On the residential rows it usually parks right at the stoop, and we plan around which side of your street is clear that morning. The two spines are trickier. Myrtle Avenue has the M on the elevated tracks overhead and a bus route in the curb lane, and Fresh Pond Road is shopfronts and delivery vans along the run between Metropolitan and Myrtle Avenues, so an apartment above a store gets loaded from the corner of the nearest side street. I'm on the third floor of one of the yellow-brick sixes. How does that go?
Every one of those buildings is a walk-up, two doors off each landing and stairs the whole way to the truck, so it all comes down by hand. We pad the banister and the landing wall, and the tall pieces go down on their side with a mover at each end where the stairs turn. If yours is a railroad layout, we clear back to front, so the back bedroom is out before the rest of the apartment is in its way.
Will my building want a certificate of insurance?
The newer managed buildings and the conversions nearer Wyckoff Avenue usually do, and every management company words the certificate its own way. Send us what yours wants named on it and the office it goes to, and we file it with them ahead of your date. Where the building is owner-run with no agent behind it, you are usually not asked for one at all, and if the owner does want one we file it the same way.
A studio going four blocks, is that too small to book?
Not at all. There is still a stoop at each end, a stair turn on every landing and a mattress that has to clear the railing on the way down, so a studio gets the same padding and the same flat price as a full apartment, on a shorter day.
How is the price worked out?
From your inventory and the two buildings it has to travel between, agreed before anyone lifts a box, and then it holds. A stair turn that eats twenty minutes will not change it, and neither will a delivery truck parked across Fresh Pond Road. Tell us the floor at both ends and the stairs are in the price we send you.
My new place isn't ready for two weeks. Can you hold everything?
Yes. Your things go into storage for the gap and come out to the new address once the keys are yours, still padded from the first leg. Give us the rough dates while we are working out the price, and we cover both legs and the storage in between with a single quote.
